NADA COMO Lá (r)
Nada Como Lá(r) - In English: There’s No Place Like Home is about memories. Memories we build throughout our lives, but especially when we’re young. As children we tend to live in our own world, building the fantasy of our imagination.
In this body of work, Helena has chosen to analyze and reinterpret her childhood memories. Being a multidisciplinary artist and focusing on image-making, Helena has built sets, sculptures, and costumes with the intent to create the universe where these memories will exist.
Being born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Helena's intention is to showcase her own reality and view of her country by bringing in elements that are both meaningful and represent the Brazilian culture. Such as traditional celebrations like Carnaval and São Cosmo e Damião, Brazilian folklore and lullabies, and more day-to-day elements like classic beach chairs and street food. All these elements are included with the aim to explore her personal identity through the national identity.
Helena believes that as children we have no filter because anything is possible. This makes our childhood memories become way more vivid than any others. As a child you allow your imagination to take you to places, and as grown-ups, we learn not to do so.
By revisiting these moments, Helena created a place where all her memories are kept. Childhood memories, emotions, and objects are translated into a dream-like fantastic land.
